September is our month to celebrate amazing women doing great works in their fields. This week, we celebrate the awesomeness of an EmpoweredEve – Dr. Joy Adomokhai.
Enjoy our interview with her:
Let’s meet you?
I am Dr Joy Adomokhai, an optometrist and entrepreneur.
Honestly, I never saw myself as an entrepreneur basically because I felt I had no knowledge whatsoever about business. As the years passed, it dawned on me that one way or the other we are all selling something. For me what I was selling was Eyecare. Though it looked clinical in nature, but there was a very lucrative business aspect of being an optometrist. After working with several eye care facilities in Lagos and Port Harcourt, I realized that I had developed to some extent capacity to launch myself out there. So my husband and I decided it was time and we went for it. It’s been a roller coaster but a very rewarding journey so far. I have come to understand that there is always a solution for every challenge in business. One of my mantra I use routinely is to tell myself the truth even though it might be hard. Reason for this is that some challenges are self-made. Being realistic in terms of where my business currently is at each given time helps me restrategize and plan better for the future.
What’s the story behind the business?
As an Eye care professional, I find fulfillment and satisfaction when I help people who are needlessly visual impaired have and experience good vision. This, in turn, goes a long way to improve on their quality of life. I believe that the eye is one of the most important human sense organs as good vision is required for basically everything we do. Due to the high rate of ignorance in eye health and safety in our society, I realized that there was more I could do with my profession as an optometrist. One of the militating factors that prevent people from seeking eye care is funds. So I set out to bridge the gap in the accessibility of eye care by making eye care easily accessible and affordable to all in a safe and conducive environment. Overall, it has been a rewarding journey. This is not to say there has not been not so bright days.
What’s the connection between your faith and your dreams in becoming a successful, inspiring entrepreneur?
As an individual, one of my Core value is God. My faith as a believer is the main factor in my life as a businesswoman. My business core values are scripture inspired. During times when I feel overwhelmed and begin to doubt myself, I go back to God’s promises over my business and my spirit gets lifted. God has opened up doors of favour for us as a business that are indisputably clear that this could only be by the hand of God.
What will you say to your younger self and by extension, every other young girl dreaming big dreams, with all you know today?
You are enough! You are good enough, beautiful enough, strong enough for your purpose. You don’t have to look like someone else or be someone else to be relevant. Don’t look for the easy way out of life challenges. Go through the process; it was made to build you. Little victories here and there help to build your confidence. Live intentionally, have faith in God and confidence in self. You can be the best version of you; be consistent and invest time to self growth and development.
This is the best time to build yourself. Nobody has it all figured out all at once so it’s ok if you don’t have everything figured out every time. Just do it, even if you have to do it afraid. Don’t be shy, Speak up. Don’t lose sight of the goal. Paint the picture of where you want to be, make it big, then work on it. Don’t give up easily, demand more. Ask when you don’t understand, don’t assume. Don’t beat yourself too hard, learn from your mistake, pick yourself up, smile, your Father owns the World and He has given you everything you need.
Who is your greatest inspiration and why?
My Dad.
He is the strongest person i know. He modelled how a man should run his home, love his wife and children, love the Lord and spiritual things. I saw how much he sacrificed and pushed to make sure his family got the best especially academically and spiritually. He made sure he pushed everyone of his children and he would go the extra mile just to ensure that we were grounded enough to face life challenges. Growing up, I always woke up the the sound of his prayers, he modeled to me the power of the bended knees. Through his influence, I knew from my little days that I had to marry a praying man and I did.
What do you do daily that brings you closer to your big goals?
I go through my vision, the picture of where I want to be routinely. This helps keep me in check and pushes me to be more intentional in my daily activities. Also I found creating an itinerary and setting goals for the day to be very useful. This helps me curb time wasting and keeps me on track especially when i have deadlines to meet.

Final words.
Life is intentional. Things don’t just happen by themselves, you need to do the needful as we rely on God’s grace. You get from life what you demand from it. Actions have consequences even seemingly good actions like eating food.
